When you or a loved one needs medical attention, it’s important to know where to turn for the most appropriate and timely care.

Start with your primary care provider

Your family physician (FP) or nurse practitioner (NP) is your first point of contact. Many offer same-day appointments for urgent concerns – and can often help you decide whether your issue can be managed in the clinic or needs further care.

When to visit a walk-in clinic or UPCC

Walk-in clinics and Urgent Primary Care Centres (UPCCs) serve the need for more subacute conditions that can be treated without access to the Emergency Department. These are issues that need care within 24-48 hours. Examples include: minor respiratory issues, minor cuts, burns, sprains, and skin rashes.

When to go to the Emergency Department

The Emergency Department is for serious or life-threatening conditions that cannot wait and require immediate hospital care. Go to the emergency room for:

  • Chest pain or signs of a heart attack
  • Stroke symptoms (e.g., facial drooping, slurred speech, sudden weakness)
  • Difficulty breathing or severe asthma attack
  • Loss of consciousness or seizures
  • Heavy bleeding
  • Major trauma (e.g., car accidents, serious falls)

If a condition could put your life or long-term health at risk, don’t hesitate – go to the ER or call 9-1-1.
