Ozempic, a drug that Health Canada approved for the management of diabetes, can also be used for weight-loss treatment. Given its dual use and known benefits, the use of Ozempic has increased, and as a result, there have been ongoing shortages of the Ozempic® 1 mg pen. However, the manufacturer of this medication has provided updates that both the 0.25 and 0.5 mg pens will also experience supply delays. Alternatives to Ozempic® have also been having shortages due to the increased demand.

Currently, the manufacturers are asking pharmacists to limit the refill quantities of prescriptions to a 30-day supply to promote equitable access to the medication. If you are currently taking Ozempic®, it is recommended to contact your pharmacy well in advance of running out of your current supply. Pharmacare currently has a daily maximum on the lower-strength pens (0.25 and 0.5 mg) and doubling the dose will result in partial coverage. Therefore, individuals need to be aware that there may be intermittent delays in the availability of Ozempic®.

Estimates are that the Ozempic® shortages will be resolved by the end of March 2024.
